County Stone Ltd has built a fantastic reputation for creatively responding to highly varied and often rather ‘different’ types of commissions and contracts both in the domestic and commercial markets - one of the most recent and challenging includes the supply and fitting of granite surfaces within 18 luxury apartments in a 150 year old listed Golden Hill Fort on the Isle of Wight!
Easy? Not really. The majority of the hi- spec kitchens in the super-luxury development were on the second floor to maximise panoramic views across the Solent, English Channel and rolling countryside. This meant County Stone’s exquisite granite surfaces had to be hand lifted up numerous flights of stairs – extremely difficult when each piece weighs an incredible amount…. and mistakes could be costly.
Says, Paul Dore, County Stone’s Factory Manager and a highly experienced Stone Mason, “At Golden Fort, the kitchens are the focal point of each spectacular and individually designed house. County Stone’s brief was to provide a choice of 5 premium grade granites to reflect the beauty and luxury of the £500,000 – £1 million apartments. From Angolan Black to Bianco Sardo, Baltic Brown to Zeus Quartz each piece of stone was hand-picked for its colour, tone and quality. We were delighted with the result and proud to have won the contract for such a prestigious and unusual development”.
Constructed between 1863 and 1868, and sited sixty metres above the north west coast of the Isle of Wight , Golden Hill Fort is a unique hexagonal building which has the height, strength and strategic position to help counter a serious attack from across the Channel. Unlikely in this day and age, however the residents of this remarkable new development can rest assured they not only live in a property built to last, but one featuring exquisite kitchens, finished with County Stones hallmark of quality and style - which will definitely stand the test of time!
