Kitchen lighting must be flexible, expert claims

Homeowners should have several different types of lights in their kitchens, so they can function as both practical and welcoming spaces, an expert has said.

Writing for, Sally Stoney, design director at John Cullen lighting, recommends that homeowners shouldn’t use exposed light fittings in the kitchen because they gather too much dirt, most of which is created by cooking. As an alternative, she says lights with glass covers should be used, particularly on any fittings situated above a cooker. Otherwise use recessed or semi-recessed fittings.

A separate article on sf says that only using recessed lights can create shadows in certain parts of the room, which is why a variety of different types of lighting are needed. There several key areas of the kitchen that need to be well-lit, such as the sink, oven and food prep area, so that cooks aren’t left in the dark.

Ms Stoney notes that kitchen islands should also be well-lit using LED down lights, so anyone cooking can chop vegetables without cutting themselves. A bright kitchen worksurface is very important too and can be lit using under cupboard lights. Those who want something more flashy, could opt for a glass splash back that changes colour, something that would really impress the guests.
