How To Use Colour In Bathroom Design

The bathroom is one of the most important areas of the home. As well as being a sanctuary where you can relax and unwind after a long hard day, it is also an area of the home that is likely to be frequently seen by visitors. This means it is important to get the look right.

When it comes to decorating a bathroom, there are many different options for the colour scheme, depending on what atmosphere you are trying to achieve. A lot of people do tend to like light and breezy pastel colours, however bold colours and zesty shades work well too.

Going all-white

Opting for an all-white bathroom will give you a fresh look, which will help maximise any light that you have coming in to the room. However, make sure you have a few different tones working in the room as otherwise it may end up looking too medical!

For example, if you have white walls, you may want to choose a bath which has a wood panel for a contrasting touch, or even wood flooring. Metal finishes also work well in white bathrooms, as well as plants or simple white flowers.

Getting zesty

If you want to wake up with a zing in the morning, then why not opt for a bright and zesty colour scheme, such as lime green, hot pink or purple? These colours work well on their own, or you may want to combine a couple of them. Make sure you don’t go too crazy though, as you don’t want to give yourself a headache!

Opting for a black bathroom can really make a bold statement. However you will need to use some other shades to make sure your bathroom doesn’t look like a cave. The best colours to team with black are greys and whites. For example, you may want to use grey granite worktops, or some white appliances.

Patterns also work well with black, especially stripes, or you may even want to have a statement wall where you use a black patterned wallpaper, which will add interest to the room. Again, make sure you have good lighting, as otherwise your bathroom may be too dark.

Pretty pastels

If you want more of a traditional, light and airy bathroom, pastels such as baby blue, soft pink and canary yellow are great choices and will catch the light and brighten up the room.

You can pretty much team them with whatever accessories you like, for example you could opt for wood cabinets, or go all-white with your appliances. Florals and other patterns will also work well in pastel bathrooms, as will granite or quartz worktops.

Neutral shades

If you want a bathroom that is quite understated and contemporary, but are not sure about colour, then why not opt for neutral? This can be a scheme of shades such as beiges, creams, whites, greys and black all put together in a muted style.

The key to this colour scheme is to make sure that one shade doesn’t dominate or stand out too much, as the colours should flow together well. Wood is also great to use in neutral bathrooms, as well as white finishings.
