Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean moss off a headstone?
When looking to clean moss off a headstone, the first thing to consider is what the headstone is made of. Headstones and memorial stones come in many different stone types, and some of these can react to cleaning products.
A simple cleaning option is to use soap and water, which is gentle enough not to react with most stones. You may also be able to use a sanding blade or wallpaper stripping tool to lightly scrape away the moss gently without damaging the stone.
The best solution, however, would be to hire a professional headstone cleaner. They will be able to choose the correct cleaning products and/or tools to ensure that nothing is damaged and that your monument stone continues to look its best.
How do I polish a granite headstone?
Once you’ve cleaned your headstone, you can polish it using a clean, dry cloth to remove any streaks or water spots.
How are gravestones engraved?
At County Stone, our highly skilled carvers use one of two different methods to engrave a headstone or memorial stone – either hand-cut lettering or sandblasted lettering.
With hand-cut lettering, the words are sketched out onto the memorial stone, then cut in a v-shaped which creates a shadowing effect that adds extra depth and dimension to the lettering.
Sandblasted lettering is perfect if you are looking for uniformity in your memorial stone lettering, as it gives a very precise letter edge. Sandblasted lettering is designed on a computer, then cut into blast-resistant vinyl tape. This tape is then attached to the memorial stone and the inscription blasted on.
The style of lettering that you choose may be limited based on the choice of finish on the stone itself and some finishes are simply not suitable for use on certain stones. We will work with you to choose the perfect combination for your memorial stone.
How do I make headstone decoration arrangements?
How do I make headstone decoration arrangements?
There are many different options for decorating a headstone or memorial stone, from saddle arrangements to vases. There are also different options that work best depending on the time of year. It’s important to choose a headstone decoration that works best for you and which is easy to maintain.
Who installs the headstone at the cemetery?
Once we have completed your headstone or memorial stone, County Stone will deliver and install it at the churchyard or cemetery on your behalf.
Will there be any restrictions for a headstone at the cemetery?
All cemeteries, churches and crematoriums will have rules and regulations about what headstones they will allow. It’s important to do some research and talk to the location before choosing your headstone or memorial stone. Once you understand what your chosen location will allow and have ordered your headstone, we will complete an application to the location to get it approved. At this point, we will be able to proceed with creating your headstone or memorial stone and preparing it for installation.
How long does it take to get a headstone made?
It can take 10-20 weeks for a memorial stone or headstone to be made since it is dependent on material sourcing and construction time.
