Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean moss off a headstone?

The first thing to consider when looking to clean moss off a headstone is what material the headstone is made of. Certain materials can react to cleaning products.

If you’re looking for an easy cleaning option, mixing together soap and water may do the trick, but you could also gently use a sanding blade or wallpaper stripper to lightly scrape away the moss without damaging the stone.

The best solution to this problem would be to hire a professional headstone cleaner to do the job for you so that nothing is damaged, and the headstone looks its best.

How do I polish a granite headstone?

Once you’ve cleaned your headstone, you can polish it using a clean, dry cloth to remove any streaks or water spots.

How are gravestones engraved?

Our highly skilled and experienced carvers create engravings on a headstone using one of two different methods, either hand-cut lettering or sandblasted lettering.

Hand-cut lettering is cut in a v-shape, after being sketched out onto the memorial, creating a shadow effect that adds extra depth and dimension to lettering.

Sandblasted lettering is perfect if you’re looking for uniformity since it gives a very precise letter edge. Sandblasted lettering is designed on a computer and then cut into blast resistant vinyl tape. This tape is then attached to the headstone or memorial and then the inscription is blasted on.

Please be aware that some styles of lettering are not suitable for certain finishes and some finishes are not suitable for use on certain stones. We will advise you what is best for the memorial headstone you have chosen.

How do I make headstone decoration arrangements?

There are lots of different options available for decorating a headstone throughout the year, from saddle arrangements to vases. It’s important to choose the one that works best for you, and one that you will find easy to maintain.

Read our blog about the different ways to decorate memorials throughout the year for more inspiration.

Who installs the headstone at the cemetery?

County Stone will deliver and install the headstone once it has been completed.

Will there be any restrictions for a headstone at the cemetery?

All cemeteries, churches and crematoriums will have rules and regulations about what headstones they will allow. It’s important to do some research and talk to the location before choosing your headstone. Once you have done so, and have reached the ordering phase, we will complete an application to the location to get it approved.

Find out more about the process here.

How long does it take to get a headstone made?

It can take anything between 8 and 16 weeks for a memorial or headstone to be made since it is dependant on material sourcing and construction time.
